ADOPTION TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF TÜRKIYE
ALL OUR ANIMALS ARE BASED IN TURKEY.
For adoptions Q&A click here.
As a charity we do not arrange travel for adoptions to the UK/out of Türkiye. The reason for this is, we do not have the volunteer resources or back up for home checks or failed adoptions.
What we can do is share the information with you and give you our recommendations, the rest is up to you!
Please note, all countries differ from their own entry requirements. The below information is based on UK travel requirements as of Nov 2024.
Travel preparation
Taking your pet back to the UK will take around four to five months, if you do not already have a pet passport and valid titre test. Young puppies – the process takes longer as they have to be of a certain age before they can have a rabies vaccination/chip.
Firstly you need to get your pet micro-chipped and registered on the state online system. Only an individual with Turkish ID number can be classed as the “owner” on the system. The “owner” can be changed on the paperwork prior to travel (the person taking the pet out has to be the person named on the paperwork) or a POA given.
Your pet will also need a rabies vaccination. It is important that the chip is done either before or on the same date as the rabies vaccination and both must be registered on the system and a rabies sticker put into the passport, with the date. A separate booster vaccination should also be given against parvo and distemper and recorded in the book. The costs for these vary depending on the vet used, but the state vet/Tarim office can do the owner registration, chip and rabies vaccination for approximately 300tl. Mixed vaccination is approximately 1500tl.
30 days after the rabies vaccinations (the date of the vaccination counts as day 0, not day 1) your vet can do a blood/titre test. Again the cost depends on the vet used and price increases happen regularly. Currently the test is approximately 10,000tl. (Nov 2024)
The blood test results usually take a few weeks to come back. If the results are ok, your pet can travel 90 days from the date of the blood test.Just before the date of travel, the pet must visit the state vet where a certificate is issued to authorise the travel. In addition the pet must be treated at this point for tape worm. Consideration needs to be given as to where the pet would stay whilst it is getting “travel ready”.
A foster home or kennel environment would need to be found and this would normally cost in the region of £100/£120 a month. There are several different ways of getting your pet to the UK depending on how long you wish your pet to travel, expense and how much organising you want to do.
By road with an authorised transport company.
The pet would travel by road in a climate controlled environment, in crates, with other animals. The transport company are authorised to transport animals and are fully insured. Costs vary depending on where in the UK the pet is travelling to (it’s a door to door service) but typically it’s about £1000 to £15000. (Nov 2024 The trip takes approx 5 days.
By air/road with a “buddy” traveller.
There are individuals who will accompany your pet on their journey, they will book all transport and will deliver your pet to your door. The pet would fly from Turkey to Europe and would then be transported via road/rail and then ferry to the UK. The pet would arrive normally on the same day that it leaves Türkiye (or the following day at the latest). Costs can vary.
Owner transportation.
The owner could travel to Türkiye and then transport the pet back themselves. You cannot fly a pet direct into the UK from Turkey.
These are the travel companies we recommend who are registered and local to us. Please contact them to discuss prices and availability.
